Effects of Common Structural Rules on hull-girder reliability of an Aframax oil tanker

چکیده
This paper aims at quantifying the changes in notional reliability levels that result from redesigning an existing Aframax tanker to comply with the Common Structural Rules (CSR) for double-hull oil tankers. The probability of structural failure is calculated using the first-order reliability method. The evaluation of the wave-induced load effects that occur during long-term operation of the ship in the seaway is carried out in accordance with the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS)-recommended procedure, while transfer functions are calculated using the sink–source 3D linear method. The still-water loads are defined on the basis of a statistical analysis of loading conditions from the loading manual. The ultimate collapse bending moment of the midship cross section, which is used as the basis for the reliability formulation, is evaluated by progressive collapse analysis and by a single-step procedure according to CSR. The reliability assessment is performed for ‘‘as-built’’ and ‘‘corroded’’ states of the existing ship and a reinforced ship complying with CSR. It is shown that the hull-girder failure probability of an Aframax tanker is reduced several times due to the reinforcements according to CSR. Sensitivity analysis and a parametric study are performed to investigate the variability of results with the change of parameters of pertinent random variables within their plausible ranges. Finally, differences between load combination approaches by Ferry-Borges and Castanheta method and Turkstra’s rule are investigated. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Oil Tanker Design Methodology Considering Probabilis- Tic Accident Damage
This paper proposes a total-system design methodology that includes four important components necessary for a systematic approach to oil tanker concept design. These are: • An efficient and effective search of design space for optimal or non-dominated designs • Well-defined and quantitative measures of objective attributes, cost and risk • An effective format to describe the design space and to...
متن کاملApplying Sectional Seakeeping Loads to Full Ship Structural Models Using Quadratic Programming
Interest in the seakeeping loads of vessels has increased dramatically in recent years. In current design practice, methods for predicting seakeeping motions and loads are mainly in two categories, strip theory methods and 3Dpanel methods. Methods based on strip theory provide reasonable motion prediction and are computationally efficient. However, many strip theory methods provide only hull gi...
متن کاملAn oil outflow model for tanker collisions and groundings
In this paper we have developed an oil outflow model for collision and grounding accidents of tankers. The collision model explicitly links input variables such as tanker hull design (single or double), displacement and speed, striking vessel displacement and speed, and the interaction angle of both vessels to output variables: longitudinal and transversal damage extents of the tanker. Overlayi...

Abstract On 4 July 2019, Gibraltar seized oil tanker Grace 1. The Gibraltar`s Chief Minister stated that considering the sanctions under European Council Decisions 255 and 36 including prohibition of the sale, supply and export of equipment, goods and technology which might be used for internal repression of the people of Syria and also the restriction on the purchase, import and transfer of t...
متن کاملStudy on the Structural Behaviour of the Topside Modules of FPSO under the Forces Exerted on the Ship Hull
The extraction of oil and gas from deep water is one of the most important challenges of the oil and gas industry today. FPSO is one of the leading platforms for deep waters. This study discussed the performance of FPSO deck modules under loads exerted on the hull of the ship. Modeling of the studied module was executed by SACS software and the effect of support using neoprene in the function o...
